Summer 2018 - California
Sagehen Creek at the Sagehen Field Station north of Truckee, CA
The Sagehen Creek Field Station is an amazing research and teaching facility north of Truckee/Lake Tahoe. It is mostly alpine, high elevation meadow with a gorgeous little stream (you guessed it - Sagehen Creek) flowing through it. The channel gradient was not as steep as at the other two sites, making Sagehen Creek more of a traditional meandering stream with a combination of riffles, depositional pools, undercut banks, and large woody debris. Sagehen Creek was also much smaller than the other creeks but surprisingly, fish density was about 5-10 times higher!
